Early orthodontic treatment raises no doubts in the literature, and yet in Poland the youngest, 5-7-year-old underbite patients, receive information that nothing can be done. Is there really no hope for meaningful treatment for the youngest underbite patients?
If someone undertakes therapeutic activities, non-surgical treatment of skeletal class III in patients after 10-12 years of age is considered strictly camouflage treatment.
Is this really the case?
Does treatment with orthopedic appliances (elastic chin strap and face mask) cause changes in the shape of the facial bones only in the youngest age groups? I will answer these and other questions during this training. On specific cases of patients in the growing period (from 5 to 18 years of age), effective treatment proven over the last 15 years will be shown using a face mask and an individual elastic band (mental sling), class III extracts, various varieties of RME (starting with the modified Haas according to Marco Rosa for hybrid braces on palatal microimplants) and various types of acrylic overlays cemented on the front or side teeth of the maxilla and mandible.
Lecture schedule
Treatment of the youngest patients (5-8 years) with skeletal class III using an elastic chin bandage and lower cemented side onlays:
– indications and contraindications
– course of treatment and its effects
– long-term follow-up
Early treatment of patients with an elastic chin strap and a lower cemented anterior acrylic or composite splint:
– indications and contraindications
– course of treatment and its effects
Early treatment of patients with a face mask and Hyrax on acrylic splints or hybrid RME (5-12 years), before the growth spurt:
– indications and contraindications
– course of treatment and its effects
– long-term observation
Treatment of patients during the growth spurt
– actions at the most dangerous stage period of growth of the body and jaw:
– extraction of wisdom teeth or wisdom teeth in the lower jaw?
– when to attach a fixed appliance + class III tractions and when to only modify the growth of the mandible
– biomechanics of class III tractions
– band or face mask
Non-surgical treatment after a growth spurt
(facial mask + RME + 2 fixed appliances + class III tractions):
– when Haas on acrylic splints, and when hybrid?
– RME on rails or rings?
– course of treatment and its effects
– additional lip-bumper or microimplants in the mandibular line?
– long-term follow-up after the end of growth
Actions at the end of the growth spurt after removal of fixed appliances:
– how to protect patients against residual growth at the end of the developmental period?
– what happens if the patient does not follow the recommendations?
Practical workshops
The last part of the two-day training will be a workshop on individual fitting of an elastic chin strap – practical classes that always take place in a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere.
Workshop participants will adjust and attach a headband to their neighbor’s head with safety pins, using elements previously prepared by a seamstress. In this way, they will learn how to fit the device to their patients and how to use force gauges.
The tools you need to bring with you are: Sharp scissors for cutting the material.
Force gauge with a force range of at least up to 600 g.

She obtained her first degree of specialization in general dentistry in 1996, and her second degree in 1999. In 2009, she obtained her doctorate in medical sciences from the Medical University of Poznań. Since 1999, he has been giving lectures on orthodontics at the Postgraduate Study of Orthologopedics at the University of Silesia in Katowice. He is a member of orthodontic associations: Section of Maxillofacial Orthopedics PTS, PTO, WFO and AAO. Since 2009, he has been giving presentations and lectures, as well as publishing scientific articles. His main scientific interests focus on non-surgical orthopedic treatment of skeletal defects, skeletal maturity and its impact on treatment results, and the use of rapid jaw expansion in maxillo-orthopedic treatment of children, adolescents and adults.
Her PhD thesis, published jointly with Tiziano Baccetti, initiated growth spurt research around the world and received over 90 citations in human development publications.
